The American Great Plains once extended uninterrupted from Canada to central Texas, a vast ocean of grasses that supported millions of Bison and teemed with wildlife including many species of birds. The Colorado plains are home to short grass prairie with blue grama, buffalo grass and the less prevalent galleta grass interspersed with prickly pear cactus and soap weed yucca. Here we can find shortgrass prairie specialists like the Mountain Plover, Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed Longspurs and Colorado’s state bird, the Lark Bunting. Burrowing Owls make their homes in Prairie Dog towns and Pronghorn Antelope, the fastest mammals in America, still roam the landscape. Our tour will visit the Pawnee National Grassland, one of the largest remaining tracts of shortgrass prairie in America.
